A rural farm bridge

When a loyal customer tells us about a unique problem on their property, it’s an honor to help find a solution. That was the story with this bridge. This property has a back section separated from the house by a small creek, and the owners wanted a bridge to connect the two parcels. But they needed more than the existing decrepit foot bridge. For the sake of maintaining the back property to the same high standards as the rest, they wanted to be able to drive their John Deere tractor across the bridge.

To address this need, we took a step outside our usual concrete projects and built a bridge that’s as sturdy as it is attractive, with a rustic industrial flair. This project entailed the following tasks:

  1. Pour concrete footings to ensure stability.

  2. Bring in rip rap to shore up the edges of the creek on both sides of the bridge, to avoid runoff as a result of the construction.

  3. Weld a steel frame for the bridge (constructed off-site and then transported and set in place).

  4. Build the decking out of 4”x10” wood.

  5. Pour concrete aprons on both ends of the bridge to ensure the area leading up to the bridge stays stable for many years.
